BMW has definitely got a winning combination with the variety of engines that go under its hood. The 5 series is a wonderful car to climb into and explore the open road whether it twists and turns or opens up on the free way. You’ll definitely enjoy being in the driver’s seat we think.
You can pick either of the Gran Turismo Hatchback , Saloon or Touring Estate specifications, and even in the basic E trim, you’ll get a fair amount of equipment, including sat nav, Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, parking sensors, DAB radio, leather upholstery and alloy wheels. Luxury trim will give you more comfort and the M lines will give you a body kit and bigger wheels. As with big brand names, the options may cost you a pretty penny though so be careful what you tick on your list.
The 5 series scores the full 5 stars on the ANCAP safety rating and the car is not only safe for you, but for pedestrians too. It includes the full suite of airbags, tyre-pressure monitoring, ISOFIX child-seat mounting points, stability control and anti-lock brakes as well as more options if you have money to blow.
The BMW range of cars come from excellent engineering and the 5 series is no exception with quiet hums on the expressway and fantastic steering and handling that is responsive and reactive. You can definitely get some fun out of revving the car out of the driveway and unto the streets.
The suspension is a bit stiff so we’d definitely recommend getting the optional Adaptive Drive system so that you can get the most out of the whole BMW experience. Otherwise, the car might lack the firmness to give you a more comfortable ride, although without the adaptive dampers, the ride is already exceptional compared to other luxury sedans.
BMW has always come with a fantastic standard when it comes to interior quality, albeit a bit dark with not much variation from black. But you will get wood inlay around the glovebox and the dashboard which is a nice touch, and the controls and dials are all well-placed and easy to get to from the driver’s seat.
The seats are also worth mentioning and with the array of options for adjustment, it’s easy to get comfortable. There is excellent space in the backseat for rear passengers as well and the centre armrest and ski-port are great in case the car is used to ferry big business partners around.
The boot gives about 520 litres of space and with the rear seats folding flat 60:40, you can definitely get a fair amount of things in there too.
We found the BMW real fun to drive and the engine is definitely top-notch. You’ll get plenty of space and technology and even more so if you’re willing to fork out money for more options.
