The Suzuki Celerio is aimed at city living what with its small stature but big interior. The looks of the car may be a bit lacklustre, but there are lots of plus points to the vehicle at this price – it’s likely to be the cheapest micro car available considering the amount of kit that it comes with. It’s only available in 1 specification but you can choose manual or CVT with a premium required for the automatic option.
The car comes as a 5-door, 4-seating hatchback with a small 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine. It comes with remote central locking, power windows, Bluetooth and a number of colour options to personalise it to your liking. Unfortunately the Celerio doesn’t come with sat nav.
The Suzuki Celerio has all the basic safety features with 6 airbags, stability control, anti-lock brakes, front seat belt pre-tensioners and load limiters, as well as electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist but surprisingly only scores 4 stars on the ANCAP safety rating.
As we mentioned earlier, the Celerio is a great car for driving around down town. Its size and easy steering will make it easy to get in and out of tight alleys and into parking lots. You’ll get excellent vision from the driver’s seat too, so that’s definitely a plus. The car is even pretty quiet even when at speed, except from a bit of noise from the tyres. It’s not rattling in the cabin, but it could be quieter considering how thin the walls feel around you.
And as with most small cars, you’ll probably feel the Celerio start to wheeze once you need to take off at a red light and when you get out to the highways. Overtaking in particular was disastrous for us and we felt inclined to stick to the left most lanes together with the other slower vehicles. You’ll find yourself flooring the accelerator a lot unfortunately.
Bumps and potholes are taken in its stride though, not more jerky than what we expected. It isn’t terribly smooth, but neither are you being thrown about when you go over a bit of texture on the road like cobbles and gravel.
When you get into the Celerio, you’ll be surprised at how spacious it actually feels inside. Particularly for headroom and shoulder room, the people up front won’t have anything to complain about. The driver’s seat is high but a bit firm, supportive enough in the right places though. 2 people in the backseat have enough space as well, but a 3rd will probably be quite a squeeze.
There are lots of cubbies, cup holders and storage bins littered around the cabin though and the boot affords 254 litres which is quite generous for this class of vehicle.
Quality is a bit cheap-looking though, but again when looking at cars in the micro segment, you are more likely looking for a great deal rather than posh seats and expensive trims. The controls and dials are all ergonomic enough for the driver to reach out to, and that’s really all you need.
With the space that you can get with the Suzuki Celerio and low running costs, this car might seem like a great deal for you if you can deal with the lack of power.
